Definition of the Swiss watch

A watch is to be regarded as a Swiss watch if:

  1. its technical development has taken place in Switzerland;
    1. in the case of exclusively mechanical watches, at least the mechanical construction and prototyping of the watch as a whole,
    2. in the case of watches that are not exclusively mechanical, at least the    mechanical construction and prototyping of the watch as a whole, together with the conception of the printed circuit or circuits, the display and the software;
  2. its movement is Swiss;
  3. its movement has been cased up in Switzerland;
  4. final inspection by the manufacturer took place in Switzerland and
  5. at least 60% of the manufacturing costs is generated in Switzerland

List of unavailable materials in Switzerland

The federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, the FH, is publishing a list of unavailable materials in Switzerland and keeping it updated (French and German only). Based on the entries in this list, a watch manufacturer can assume that he can exclude the costs of materials supplied from abroad from his manufacturing costs, in proportion with their quoted unavailability.

Definition of the Swiss watch movement

To be regarded as a Swiss movement, the movement must:

  1. have undergone technical development in Switzerland:
    1. for exclusively mechanical movements, at least mechanical construction and prototyping of the movement as a whole,
    2. for movements that are not exclusively mechanical, at least mechanical construction and prototyping of the movement as a whole, together with the conception of the printed circuit or circuits, conception of the display and conception of the software;
  2. have been assembled in Switzerland;
  3. have been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland and
  4. at least 60% of the manufacturing costs must be generated in Switzerland
  5. and at least 50% of the value of all the constituent parts, but excluding the cost of assembly, must be of Swiss manufacture.
