A certificate of origin is a document that confirms the source of a particular product. Certificates of origin also enable exporters to enjoy certain Customs benefits on any goods that are covered by free-trade agreements.

Two important sets of provisions – the “Verordnung über die Ursprungsbeglaubigung” (the Ordinance on Certifications of Origin) and the “Verordnung des Eidgenössischen Volkswirtschaftsdepartements über den Ursprung” (the Ordinance of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs on Origins) – prescribe what criteria must be met and what procedures must be followed to obtain a Swiss certificate of origin.
